What is wrong with our kids??
As if the recent hostage taking/kidnapping/molestation/shootings/murders in the past 10 days is not enough, today an 8th grader brought an AK-47 to his school in Missourri and shot into the ceiling of the office saying "Don't make me do this"
Who's making you do this you irrate little punk?? NOONE!!
Thankfully the police responded quickly and had him in custody quickly.
In his backpack they found a note saying that he also had a bomb, instructions on how to make an IED and some materials as well.
What is happening to our kids? When I went to school, my parents did not have to worry about me being "blown away" by some psychopathic idiot, be it a child or an adult.
They worried more if I was actually going to go to class!!
I am a mother of a teenager and I live in fear every day I send my child to school.
Is some sick, twisted, maniacal bastard going to blow my kids brains out today?
I shouldn't even have to THINK about that.
My child should be safe and sound at school, getting an education, and staying on track.
No, we as parents today cannot rest easy at our jobs, housewives cannot just get the housework done and watch soap operas- those days are gone.
Instead we spend our days with worry and checking every news website available to find out "what happened NOW??".

I feel the violence in the world today could be mended if we taught our children compassion and respect for life.
A huge problem plaguing our society is our ability to unfairly judge people who suffer from mental disorders. We want to help the person who hurt in a freak car accident, but some people have no compassion for the person who is hurting from depression or schizophrenia.
We need to remember that some of the people who kill are mentally ill and in tremendous pain. We need to remember that they have family and friends who love them. And we need to remember they need medical help just like the person in the car accident.
I know if my sister got caught bringing a gun to school, I'd want to find her the absolute best medical treatment out there. Everyone has someone who loves them dearly. We all deserve to be treated with respect.

Marie, coming from a long line of mental illness in my own family, I totally agree. However, people need to learn to recognize the symptoms of mental illness before it's too late.
A friend of mine many years ago went to the hospital herself because she was mentally unstable. They knew her at the hospital and they gave her some meds and sent her out the door.
Well, she walked about a mile down the road, bought a gas can, and a gallon of gas and proceeded to a vacant car where she doused herself with gasoline and lit the match.
This was a promising, young, tennis protoge' she had such a talent and a life ahead of herself, and the medical world just gave her some pills. That disturbs me.
Do a google search for "NIMH" or National Institute for Mental Health. They have a list of symptoms we should all be aware of.

What an awesome and informative sight. I'm still trying to understand mental illness better. Over the years I've interacted with people who had different mental illnesses and I'm still struggling to comprehend what it's all about.
The story you told is frighteningly familiar to me. It's all so sad. I know some intellectually advanced people who's mental illness is keeping them from living normal productive lives. It's painful to watch these people struggle. Especially when you don't know how to help.
I'm getting way to heavy :(
Great Blog Samantha!
